Kankarwa Haveli – A Legacy of Royal Heritage

Nestled in the heart of Udaipur, Kankarwa Haveli is more than just a heritage stay; it is a living testament to the rich history of Mewar.

The story of Kankarwa traces back to the 16th century during the reign of Maharana Udai Singh Ji—the visionary founder of Udaipur. Among his trusted kin was Maharana Viramdev, the loyal brother of the legendary Maharana Pratap. From his lineage emerged the noble Kankarwa family, who shaped their own legacy in the chronicles of Mewar history.

Their journey led them to the village of Kankarwa, 60 kilometers from Udaipur, where Thakur Udai Singh built a castle that stood as a symbol of strength and governance for generations. By 1800, Thakur Abhay Singh ji established a serene residence on the banks of lake pichola, which would become the elegant Kankarwa Haveli—a magnificent urban retreat reflecting the grandeur of Mewar’s royal heritage.

For nearly two centuries, the haveli remained the family’s cherished summer residence, overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola. In 1993, an extensive restoration project was undertaken to preserve its historical charm while opening its doors to travellers. By 1995, Kankarwa Haveli welcomed its first guests, offering them an authentic experience of Rajasthan’s regal past. To this day, the family continues to reside at the property, ensuring every guest receives a personal and warm experience.
